Todd Fisher ha comunicado la triste noticia que se veía venir desde ayer por la noche: Debbie Reynolds ha muerto a los 84 años. La actriz, otro icono de Hollywood que fallece en este terrible 2016, fue hospitalizada ayer por un posible derrame cerebral y no salió con vida.
El fallecimiento de Carrie Fisher «fue demasiado» para Reynolds, según explicó su hijo Todd: «Ahora está con Carrie y todos nos sentimos devastados». Al parecer, Reynolds estaba planificando el funeral de su hija cuando se derrumbó.
Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds y Todd Fisher (1972) Mary Frances Reynolds nació en El Paso, Texas, el 1 de abril de 1932. «Debbie» fue una idea impuesta por el jefe de Warner Bros., su primer estudio al entrar en la industria del cine, con 16 años. Alcanzó el estrellato de la mano de MGM, como protagonista del musical ‘Cantando bajo la lluvia’ (‘Singin’ in the Rain’, 1952), y brilló como actriz, cantante y bailarina, tanto en la gran pantalla como en Broadway.
Fue nominada al Oscar por su papel principal en ‘Molly Brown, siempre a flote’ (‘The Unsinkable Molly Brown’, 1964) aunque sólo recibió la estatuilla dorada en 2015, como homenaje por su labor humanitaria y filantrópica. También optó cinco veces a los Globos de Oro y una vez al Emmy, por su trabajo en la serie cómica ‘Will & Grace’. En el vídeo de abajo (a partir del minuto 1:33) la vemos recogiendo otro galardón honorífico, esta vez sí por su destacada carrera, en los SAG Awards, tras una presentación realizada por su famosa hija.
Su vida personal se convirtió en un tema recurrente para la prensa rosa a partir de su divorcio de Eddie Fisher, quien la dejó por otra estrella de Hollywood: Elizabeth Taylor. Eddie fue el padre de Carrie y Todd. Un detalle curioso es que Debbie tenía 19 años cuando actuó en ‘Bailando bajo la lluvia’, la misma edad que su hija Carrie cuando encarnó a la princesa Leia en ‘La guerra de las galaxias’ (‘Star Wars’, 1977).
La estrecha y complicada relación entre ambas fue objeto de un documental que será emitido el año que viene en HBO: ‘Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds’. También dio origen a un drama de ficción, ‘Postales desde el filo’ (‘Postcards from the Edge’, 1990), escrita por Carrie Fisher a partir de su propia novela; Meryl Streep y Shirley MacLaine protagonizaron la película, como los alter egos de Carrie y Debbie.
